PONDICHERRY: A delegation of ruling Congress legislators, who have been demanding replacement of the Pondicherry PCC leader, V. Narayanasamy submitted a memorandum to the AICC president Sonia Gandhi at a meeting with her in New Delhi on Saturday. A spokesman of the delegation said from Delhi when contacted by The Hindu said that the memorandum reiterated the plea that Mr.Narayanasamy should be replaced and also presented the grounds on which the plea had been made. Stating that the AICC leader gave a patient hearing, the spokesman said that the delegation would meet AICC secretary Ambika Soni who is looking after affairs of the party in Pondicherry tomorrow. He said that the visit was satisfactory and the trend was encouraging. The delegation included the Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam, and the Local Administration Minister, A. Elumalai. In addition to the Ministers and the legislators a good number of functionaries of the party here have also signed a joint memorandum and brought to the notice of the high command the need for replacing Narayanasamy as PCC leader. Mr,Narayanasamy is also a member of Rajya Sabha elected from Pondicherry. Asked if the delegation specifically mentioned the name of a successor to Narayanasamy the spokesman said `no.' It would otherwise give the impression to the high command that "we have come in favour of a particular person. We will leave it to the high command to decide the next incumbent."
Neglect of rural areas
Among the reasons cited in the memorandum for jettisoning Narayanasamy from the PCC leadership are his ``utter disregard of dedicated persons in the party while choosing the incumbents for posts of chairmen of various statutory bodies, neglect of the rural based functionaries in the party to man certain impost posts and frequent pinpricks to the Chief Minister on various occasions resulting in unnecessary fissures among the rank and file.'' The Congress has a total strength of 16 elected and two nominated legislators in the 30-member Assembly. Already a detailed representation was made to the AICC Secretary, K.B. Krishnamurthy, MP, during his visit here last week to inaugurate a training programme organised by pro Narayanasamy wing in the party for the rank and file and also to see for himself `the development of the party in the Union Territory`. The Chief Minster N. Rangasamy, his cabinet colleagues and a majority of the legislators were conspicuous by their absence at the inauguration of the camp confirming that the anti-Narayansamy wave in the party was at its peak.
