Abducted girl rescued from U.P.

NEW DELHI: A 15-year-old girl kidnapped by a 21-year-old man from Sultanpuri in North-West Delhi last year has been rescued and the kidnapper arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police.

According to the police, Ganesh, a resident of Sultanpuri, had lodged a complaint with the area police about his daughter being kidnapped by one Dharamjeet on December 9, 2004. A case was registered and investigations taken up. The case was later transferred to the Crime Branch on directions of the Delhi Police Commissioner in February. The police conducted several raids but could not trace the girl and her kidnapper. Subsequently, a reward of Rs. 10,000 was also announced for anybody providing clues leading to the recovery of the girl.Finally, a Crime Branch team managed to nab the accused, Dharamjeet, and rescue the girl from a village in Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh on June 23.

During interrogation, Dharamjeet allegedly confessed to having kidnapped the girl after promising to marry her. The accused was married to one Krishna of Prem Nagar in Sultanpuri since 2003. However, he did not like her and wanted to establish relations with another woman. He then came into contact with the victim, who lived near his house, and made friends with her. Some time later he proposed to her.

However, when the girl's parents came to know about the "affair", they warned both of them to sever the relationship. But Dharamjeet managed to convince the victim to elope with him. On December 9, they fled and reached Daryava village in Sultanpur. There, Dharamjeet took up a job as an agricultural worker.
