GULBARGA: : The leading neurologist, Bharat L. Konin, said on Saturday that community screening surveys are required for the detection of high blood pressure and strokes. He said this is needed to obtain data on the prevalence of casual hypertension and other symptoms that increase the risk of the incidence of strokes. Speaking to The Hindu Dr. Konin said that the observation of June 26 as "World Stroke Day'' will help create awareness on preventive measures that can be taken to avoid strokes. Dr. Konin pointed out that strokes continue to be the leading cause of high morbidity and mortality in several countries. Strokes are also the leading cause of permanent disability. Survivors of strokes are often unable to recover to their previous physical state. He said by controlling blood pressure, avoiding smoking one can prevent the occurrence of strokes.
He said that Primary Health Centres and Community Health Centres should be the base stations for surveys on the prevalence of strokes, as data derived from the urban hospitals do not truly reflect the prevalence rate.
