Sethusamudram

The protest by fishermen's associations and NGOs of Tamil Nadu against the Sethusamudram project, on the ground that it will wipe out fish stocks and marine life is justified. Fish will dwindle once regular dredging is undertaken, and shipping activities will affect marine life.

The canal will ruin the fisherfolk along the Tamil Nadu coast, who know no other occupation and also do not own cultivable land to switch over to agriculture. The Sethusamudram project may help us to compete with the Colombo port, save time for vessels and so on. But it is likely to be a huge investment to save peanuts.
