Handloom sector gears up to face competition: Minister

TIRUPUR: The handloom sector in the State is gearing up to face the competition in the market, thanks to the reforms introduced by the State Government, said the Handlooms and Textiles Minister, V. Somasundaram, here on Sunday.

At a function got up to distribute bonus for the weavers by two cooperative weavers societies at Saavakkattupalayam, 30 km from here, the Minister said export of handloom varieties from Tamil Nadu had gone up manifold in recent years.

The State had exported garments, produced by the weavers cooperative societies, worth Rs. 264 crores during 2004-05 compared to the export of garments worth Rs. 25 crores a few years ago. The number of handloom weavers' cooperative societies functioning on profit had been increased from 320 in 2001 to 610 during last fiscal. The Government had introduced various initiatives to increase the sale and reduce the stock at the cooperative societies.

The Minister said the Chief Minister would lay foundation for the Rs. 120-crore Palladam hi-tech weaving park soon. The Food and Cooperation Minister, Pollachi V. Jayaraman, distributed bonus worth Rs. 20 lakhs to 550 members of Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Cotton and Silk Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society Limited and J J Cotton and Silk Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society Limited of Saavakkattupalayam. The Animal Husbandry Minister, P.V. Damodhiran, the Coimbatore Collector, C. Kosalaraman, the Avanashi MLA, J.S.Mahalingam and the Tirupur MLA, C. Sivasamy, spoke.
