NEW DELHI: India, Brazil, Germany and Japan, which constitute the G-4 grouping seeking substantive expansion of the United Nations Security Council, have managed to obtain 30 sponsors for their draft resolution circulated in New York. The resolution needs 128 votes in the 191-member General Assembly to pass muster. Senior officials dealing with the G-4 bid for Security Council expansion said major countries such as France, Greece, Poland and Portugal, were among those that agreed to co-sponsor the resolution. It seeks the addition of six members in the permanent category and four others in the non-permanent category. Afghanistan, Bhutan and the Maldives have also agreed to be co-sponsors to the G-4 resolution. New Delhi continues to hope that Sri Lanka would join the list. The officials said that the immediate priority for the G-4 was to maintain its unity given the efforts being made to divide the informal grouping.
