NEW DELHI: The worst in Himachal Pradesh is over with the water level in the Parechu reservoir in Tibet receding considerably. "The artificial lake is gone with its surface area reduced from 193 to 99 hectares and the water level from 50 to 12 metres," Union Home Secretary V.K. Duggal told reporters here on Monday evening after the disaster management committee meeting. An inter-ministerial central team would visit the State on Wednesday to assess the damage. Mr. Duggal said there was no threat of more water discharge from the reservoir. The water level at the two entry points stood at 8 and 4 metres respectively against 40 and 30 metres on Sunday. The only cause for concern was the breakdown of road communication to Kinnaur district. Hanging bridges would be put up until the Army was able to establish communication with the help of makeshift iron bridges in the next 10 days. The temporary bridges should be in place by Tuesday.
Army headquarters
The Army has set up an advance headquarters at Jateog near Shimla to monitor the situation. Two company-sized Army columns have been sent to Rampur, a Defence spokesperson said. The Indian Air Force Helicopter Squadron of MI-17 and MI-18 helicopters in Western and Central Air Command were on high alert, the spokesperson said. Mr. Duggal said the artificial dam gave way due to heavy rains in the upper reaches and impact of melting of snow. The water discharged into the Spiti and Sutlej rivers now entered Punjab.
