Supriya Maji still in lead

SANGLI: Supriya Maji was the sole leader after the seventh round of 32nd women's National B chess championship, organised by Nutan Buddhibal Mandal, here on Monday.

Supriya, playing black, drew her game with L. Iswarya Shobhana and now has six points.

Maji is half a point clear of second-placed Amruta Mokal and Soumya Swaminathan, who both scored a victory. Shobhana's tie against Supriya was evenly balanced in the middle game before the latter, with an extra pawn in hand, failed to press home her advantage. The game was drawn after the 76th move.

On the second board, H. Sowmya of Tamil Nadu opened with king's pawn against Pune-based Soumya Swaminathan. The Maharashtra player replied with the Sicilian Najdorf variation.

Sowmya sacrificed her piece on 24th move, which proved to be a wrong move as Soumya, with an extra piece in her possession, gradually used the advantage to force her rival to resign.

On board three, Swati Mohota and J.E. Kavitha adopted safety-first attitude and the game was drawn after 31 moves.

On the fourth board Amruta adopted the Scotch opening against S. Nabila Farheen. The former cleverly sacrificed her pawn on the 16th move to prise open a way to attack Farheen's black pieces. Later, Nabeela's mistake on move 30 made it a cakewalk for Amruta.

Important results (seventh round): L. Iswarya Shobhana (5) drew with Supriya Maji (6); H. Sowmya (4.5) lost to Soumya Swaminathan (5.5); Swati Mohota (5) drew with J.E. Kavitha (5); Amruta Mokal (5.5) bt S. Nabila Farheen (4.5); I. Ramya Krishna (5) bt Kiran Mohanty (4.5); P. Sivasankari (4) lost to Alka Das (5); C.
