BELGAUM: The Department of Backward Classes in district has recorded 100 per cent achievement in the implementation of development programmes during 2004-05. According to a press release here on Monday, the department spent Rs. 39.63 lakhs of the Rs. 40.35-lakh grant from the State Government during the year. In all, 761 people availed themselves of benefits under various schemes. The Government spent Rs. 34.18 lakhs under planned programme and Rs. 6.26 crores under non-plan grants on 92 pre-matric hostels run by the department. There are 5,715 students in these hostels. Assistance to the tune of Rs. 27.46 lakhs under non-plan and Rs. 2 lakhs under planned programme for post-matric education was given to 20,934 students in the district. Fee concessions amounting to Rs. 42.90 lakhs were extended to 10,018 students. The department, which runs five residential schools, spent Rs. 24.68 lakhs on their maintenance. The department runs two tailoring centres and spent Rs. 5.52 lakhs to extend various benefits through them to women.
