NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for an early start to the metro rail project in Chennai stating that a detailed project report was almost ready. Speaking at the National Development Council meeting here, Ms. Jayalalithaa expressed "dismay" that metro railway was discussed only in the context of Delhi and Kolkata, and in the passing for Bangalore.
Linking of rivers
Ms. Jayalalithaa found fault with the Mid-Term Appraisal document brought out by the Union Planning Commission on certain mega irrigation projects for "its inability to think with a vision of the future." "Why is it that the project for interlinking of rivers is being put into cold storage?" Pointing out that the link from the Mahanadhi to the Cauvery and thereon to the Gundar would bring new life to the entire peninsula, she urged the Prime Minister to take up the interlinking project as a priority issue rather than taking up State-specific projects. She suggested a dedicated freight rail corridor, linking Chennai to Delhi and Mumbai, be planned. She wanted the Prime Minister accord approval for the new international airport in Chennai, an aviation university in Madurai, the Tuticorin hub port and the automobile testing facility and automobile test track in Chennai. She requested establishment of the southern gas grid with Chennai as the hub with an LNG terminal.
