Boy dies of suspected dengue fever

Staff Correspondent

The number of affected people in two Tumkur villages estimated at 500

TUMKUR: A boy died of suspected dengue fever at Sogenahalli in Madhugiri taluk of Tumkur district on Monday. Nearly 40 people in the village and over 70 at Girigondanahalli, in the same taluk are suspected to be suffering from it.

However, sources in the two gram panchayats estimated the number of people affected by dengue at 200 in Sogenahalli and 300 in Girigondanahalli.

The gram panchayat authorities gave the name of the boy as Harish (15). However, V. Cheluvaraj, District Health Officer, who visited the villages, told The Hindu that the boy was suffering from anaemia. "A clear picture will emerge after laboratory tests," he said.

"Only about 30 people in Sogenahalli village complained of fever, headache, and fatigue. They are being treated at the village. Ten more persons who were found to be very weak were brought to the Madhugiri General Hospital," he said.

At Girigondanahalli, Dr. Cheluvaraj said, the main source of drinking water supply was found damaged resulting in contamination of water. He said water samples had been collected and sent to laboratories for tests. Steps had been taken to check the spread of water-borne diseases.

He said blood samples of the affected people would be sent to the National Institute of Virology. Although he did not rule out the possibility of an outbreak of dengue fever, Dr. Cheluvaraj pointed out that there was no cause for alarm.

Sources in the gram panchayats said that only a small number of the affected people had taken treatment at government hospitals while the others had gone to private hospitals in Bangalore, Tumkur and Madhugiri. Fourteen persons have been admitted to the government hospital at Madhugiri.
