FOR FARMERS' CAUSE: The Bharatiya Janata Party leaders staging a dharna in Mangalore on Monday in protest against the Government's move to recover land from small and marginal farmers.
MANGALORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will launch a protest against the eviction of tribal people from the Kudremukh National Park area by the Government. It has planned to take up a series of protests to be held in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts in the coming days. Pratap Simha Nayak, BJP district unit president, has stated that the Government is following an anti-poor policy and is asking the Forest Department to attack the tribal farmers and evict them from the national park. This eviction drive is taking place in Sullia, Puttur and Belthangady taluks where the tribal farmers are eking out a livelihood by tilling in small patches of lands. Because of the coercive methods used by the Forest Department, many youth, are drawn to join the naxalite movement. He said the tribal farmers have lost confidence in the Government. N. Nagaraja Shetty, Buntwal MLA, who addressed a rally of tribal farmers from different parts of the district, said the eviction of tribal farmers from their pastures is giving rise to uprising and the Government should ask the Forest Department to stop the survey. N. Yogish Bhat, MLA; and Nalin Kumar, party secretary; spoke.
