dated June 29, 1955: At the Wimbledon

Drobny, Wimbledon's most popular performer of post-war years, surrendered his men's singles title on the Centre Court on June 27 when beaten in the quarterfinals by Trabert, the American considered likely to succeed him. Another former champion, Patty, the American winner at Wimbledon in 1950, upset the form-book by defeating the third favourite, Hoad (Australia). Rosewall, the champion of Australia, was the third player to enter the semifinals when he beat Davidsson (Sweden). It was left to the two unseeded survivors to provide the keenest quarterfinal match of the day. In this, K. Nielsen, 24-year-old Danish champion, outlasted Italy's N. Pietrangeli to quality for a semifinal clash with Rosewall.
