Paintings on areca palm spathe

Johnny Mikhail is known for capturing trees on canvas in their various shapes, sizes and moods. The ongoing painting exhibition `Prakriti Chitramezhthu" organised by Green Earth in front of the Secretariat reveals his another facet of talent.

Mikhail had chosen the spathe of areca palm for his new paintings in stead of canvas. All the paintings have been done on the spathe of the areca palm, called `paala' in Malayalam. The artist has shown that the spathe, now being used to make plates and exported in large quantities, can be used effectively as a medium to express creativity.

"I want to create awareness among the people, especially among the younger generation, and to showcase the possibilities of the spathe of areca palm," he says.

He had recently organised an exhibition on trees and another one on art made from discarded materials.

Mikhail also finds time to paint on the spathe of areca palm at the venue. The show is on till Thursday.
