Who is on the side of people? Everyone asked as Sukumar Azhikode, social critic, took a dig at Paul Zacharia, writer. The remark led to yet another debate in literary circles. Azhikode's remark was in response to a speech made by Zacharia while receiving the Janapaksha Award in Kozhikode on Sunday. Zacharia expressed doubts about the sincerity behind the anti-Coca-Cola stir at Plachimada in Palakkad district. The stir was not for the tribal people at Plachimada, but for global publicity. If they had been waging a stir against drinking water shortage, they should have targeted their ire against sand mining, the main cause of water shortage, he said. At the inauguration of a conference to remember the contributions of the late C.K. Govindan Nair, Congress leader, in Kozhikode, Azhikode shot back saying that those supporting Coca-Cola were not on the public side. Whose side the public will take, is a million-dollar question.
