GUNTUR: The media has been highlighting the travails of patients during the junior doctors' agitation in the State. For patients in Dachepalli Public Health Centre, that is no big deal. The PHC has been without a doctor for the past eight months. The Health Department shifted the in-charge, Dr. Nayak, out of Dachepalli PHC following some allegations against him. There have been no takers for the post hence since the semi-urban centre is also a hotbed of naxalite activity in the district. With great difficulty the District Medical and Health Officer appointed Dr. Shyam Babu, on contract to work there, but he never attended to his duties. The locals find it difficult to travel either to Piduguralla or Macherla for medical care. Ironically, while the doctors were agitating to improve the quality of medicare and education in colleges, the doctors association backed Shyam Babu though he did not visit the PHC and prevailed upon officials not to initiate action against him.
Ready to work here
The doctor is allegedly working in a private hospital, though officially on contract with the Government. Another doctor from Sattenapalli, who hails from Dachepalli, wants to go there, but waits sanction for his transfer. When contacted the officials at the District Medical and Health Office confirmed that Shyam Babu was not attending to duties and that no action was initiated so far. No other arrangement was made on a permanent basis either. Only a surgeon from Phanidam PHC visits the Dachepalli one day in a week to carryout minor operations.
