In dire need of planning

THE MANNER of execution of the underground drainage scheme in Tiruchi has drawn much flak from the public, especially after a fatal accident that occurred at Srirangam recently.

However, neither the TWAD Board nor the contractor of the project seem to have learnt their lessons, if the tardy planning that continues to plague the scheme is any indication.

The contractors dig trenches on the roads unmindful of the inconvenience caused to the residents of the locality and road users. For instance, workers have now started digging trenches close to the educational complex at Thennur housing the Mahatma Gandhi Centenary Vidyalaya and the Rajaji Vidyalaya where hundreds of students and parents converge every day.

With the trenches located close to the school gates, students and parents have to precariously make their way in and out of the school.

The huge trenches, without strong barricades, are an open invitation to accidents.

With a little forethought, the authorities could have easily ensured that the work was completed near school zones during the summer vacation so that children were not exposed to danger. At this specific instance, the work was taken up immediately after the schools reopened.

So much for planning!
