Centenary celebration

The President will participate in the anniversary function



HUNDRED YEARS OLD AND STILL GOING STRONG: National Higher Secondary School in Nagapattinam.

NAGAPATTINAM: National Higher Secondary School, Nagapattinam, will celebrate its centenary on Thursday.

The school has been catering to the needs of rural people living in and around the town.

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will participate in the centenary celebration and interact with the students after releasing a souvenir on the school premises on Thursday morning. The President will also unveil a bronze bust of D. Venkatachariar who served as the headmaster of the school for more than two-and-a-half decades and will also inaugurate the new laboratory and computer laboratory.

The school owes its origin to the public-spirited citizens of Nagapattinam. The school was founded on June 9, 1904. A public meeting was convened with the late Rao Bahadur B.S. Nataraja Sastrigal in the chair and according to his advice a committee consisting of Messrs V.P. Kackirisami Pillai, M.G. Ramasami Pillai, P.S. Krishnasami Naidu, C.R. Kunjithapatham Iyer, Rao Bahadur B.S. Nataraja Satrigal and A.M. Muthu Chettiar was formed to make the necessary arrangements for the founding of the school.

The school committee now functions under P.N. Kuppusamy and V. Subramania Iyer is the secretary and correspondent of the school.

Mr. Kuppusamy says President Abdul Kalam will inaugurate the new centenary building of the school built at a cost of Rs.35 lakhs. The Oil and Natural Gas Commission has sponsored the computer laboratory and the Gas Authority of India has contributed Rs.2 lakhs for the purchase of electrical appliances.

He pointed out that a number of dignitaries including Rajaji and C.N. Annadurai visited the school and addressed meetings. Four of the school's headmasters, M.V. Natesa Iyer, R. Srinivasan, M. Subramanian and Marimuthu received Best Teacher Awards from the State Government and President. Several students too had won awards for excelling in various extra-curricular activities, he said.

R. Dwarakaikannan, headmaster of the school, said that the school had been imparting good education and pointed out that a number of students had secured top ranks in the SSLC and Plus Two public examinations. Besides, the students have brought laurels to the school through the NCC, NSS, Scouts, Junior Red Cross, Students Science, Literary Association and other clubs and associations.
