Appalling

The Darul Uloom Deoband's edict that Imrana of Muzaffarnagar, allegedly raped by her father-in-law, cannot live with her husband (June 28) is appalling. That the AIMPLB has supported it is adding insult to injury. Imrana's is a typical case of the victim being victimised and punished. It is unfortunate that women belonging to the minority community are not governed by the law of this country. Secular governments allow them to be victimised by their personal laws.

Imrana has agreed to abide by the verdict because she has been told that as per the Quran, her conjugal relationship with her husband stands dissolved since she has been raped by her husband's blood relative. Darul Uloom Deoband should publish the source from which this verdict has been derived. As the verdict has come in the form of a fatwa, it has to have the backing of the Quran. The AIMPLB should also ensure that the offender is punished.
