PONDICHERRY: The Union Territory Administration will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Russian consulate in Chennai after detailed deliberations on five major projects to be implemented with Russian technology in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions. An official source said here on Tuesday an informal dialogue was held some time back by the Local Administration Minister of Pondicherry, A. Elumalai with a delegation of the Russian Consulate recently in Pondicherry and this would be followed up by the next phase of discussions in mid July. The establishment of one deep-sea trawler fisheries project each in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions is a major scheme. The project is meant for catching certain fish beyond 50 kms from the shoreline. The Pondicherry Administration would have to make the site available for the project. The construction of the trawler port with jetty would need sites in the range of 200 to 500 acres, the official source said. The other features of the project would be break wall, shipway, workshops, cold storage facilities, and processing unit among other things. The varieties of fish that would be focusing the thoroughly export oriented project had also been identified. The source said that the varieties of the fish would be tuna, shrimp, lobster, catfish and ribbonfish. These types of fish would be available only at a distance of 50 kms and beyond from the shore. Local fishermen who normally operate within 50 kms would be protected. Another project proposed was production of compressed natural gas for the transport sector. The generation of gas, making use of the solid and municipal waste, is a third proposed project the Pondicherry Administration had shown interest in.
