Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
PONDICHERRY: P. Kannan, founder, Puducherry Munnetra Congress (PMC), has expressed his displeasure over the "silence maintained by the Lt. Governor, M. M. Lakhera, over the incidents of violence causing insecurity to people and high ranking officials in the Union Territory." Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Kannan said a group, pretending to champion the cause of Adi Dravidars of Pondicherry origin, had taken law into their hands and indulged in violence near the Chief Secretariat here on June 20. Police officers were virtually pushed down and the government properties, including the Chief Secretariat premises, damaged by the agitators. Mr. Kannan said he had been repeatedly telling that law and order was deteriorating in the Union Territory. Even as the situation was charged with tension, the Lt. Governor, residing only a few metres away from the spot, remained inactive. Mr. Kannan said that there is still time for Mr. Lakhera to act.
