PONDICHERRY: Autorickshaws and tempos went off the roads in Pondicherry on Tuesday to protest against the hike in prices of diesel and petrol. The strike went on for 12 hours from 6 a.m. Goods transport operators also participated in the strike with the result that trucks did not ply. Arrangements were made by the Transport Department in collaboration with the Directorate of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs to supply essential commodities and petrol and diesel to vehicle owners on Tuesday. Most of the roads were deserted with the vehicles remaining off the roads. Volunteers and leaders of the Pondicherry unit of the Communist parties held a demonstration at the Head Post office condemning the hike in prices of petrol and diesel.
