COIMBATORE: The Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangham has deplored the Prime Minister's opinion that it would not be possible to sustain free power scheme for farmers. In a statement, the State president of the association, M. R. Sivasamy, said farmers were struggling to survive because of slump in prices of agricultural produce. For instance, though 30 per cent of the coconut trees in Pollachi region had suffered due to drought, the price of coconut had slumped from Rs. 6 to Rs. 2 per piece. It was because of the liberal import of copra and palm oil. If liberal import were to be continued for a couple of more years, Indian agriculture would be totally ruined, he said.
