suspended

CHITRADURGA: Anandamurthy, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Rampura police station in Molakalmuru taluk, has been suspended on the charge of dereliction of duty. According to an official release, B. Dayananda, Superintendent of Police, Chitradurga, has placed Mr. Anandamurthy under suspension pending enquiry as the latter did not attend night duty on June 24. Rampura police station, which is on the border with Andhra Pradesh, is considered a highly sensitive area in the wake of naxalite activities. — Staff Correspondent

`Govt.'s days

are numbered'

CHENNAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Vice-President, M. Venkaiah Naidu, on Tuesday said the State Government's days are numbered and the State is heading for a mid-term poll. Asked how stable the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government in Karnataka was, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu said the "days are numbered and the Government will go anytime". In an apparent reference to the rift between the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, and the Janata Dal (S) President, H.D. Deve Gowda, Mr. Naidu said while the Congress is going in one direction, its partner is heading in another direction. — UNI

Lalu's assurance

to Dharam Singh

New Delhi: The Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, on Tuesday assured Karnataka that the Bangalore-Mysore railway line electrification work will be completed soon. He was addressing the National Development Council meeting. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, had requested the railways to speed up completion of all railway projects in the State by providing additional resources as the State Government had agreed to share two-third of the cost of electrification. — PTI

BANGALORE: The State Government is planning to set up more Ayurvedic schools and colleges to promote the Indian system of medicine, the Minister for Medical Education Iqbal Ansari, said here on Tuesday. He was inaugurating the Shareera Kriya Laboratory at the Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Sri Jayachamarajendra Institute of Indian Medicine. The Minister for Health and Family Welfare, N. Traffic regulation

on highway

MYSORE: Traffic near Kalasthavadi village on the Bangalore-Mysore highway is being regulated owing to the weakening and partial collapse of a bridge. Motorists have been advised to proceed slowly. Traffic police have been stationed to guide the movement of the vehicles without allowing vehicles from both sides simultaneously on the stretch. — Special Correspondent

NTSE training for students

MYSORE: Gyana Vikas Academy here will conduct a training camp for students who intend to appear for the National Talent Search Examination's (NTSE) State-level test to be held on November 27. All students studying in 10th standard are eligible to appear for the examination. The academy will hold a weekend training programme for them which will commence on July 2 and will be held at all weekends at Rotary West School, Saraswathipuram; Rotary High School near Mandovi Motors; Maharshi Public School, J.P. Nagar; and Geetha School, Siddarthanagar. The training programme will comprise lectures by qualified personnel and cover the NTSE syllabus. Interested students may register by June 30 at the academy office, Rotary West School, Saraswathipuram, on all working days between 6.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. — Special Correspondent.

Nature awareness programme held

MYSORE: The Karnataka chapter of the National Adventure Foundation, New Delhi, organised a month-long adventure and nature awareness camp for students of Government schools and colleges here. The programme was sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs. B. Banuprakash, NCC Group Commander, Mysore and Hassan, inaugurated the programme. Dilip Nambiyar, Commanding Officer, 14 Kar BN, Mysore, was present.

In all, 350 students participated in the camp and underwent training at Chamundi Hills and Kunthi Betta at Pandavapura. Among the participants were 35 students from the Government Deaf and Dumb School. The secretary of the Almanac International Voluntary Adventure Club, Mysore, coordinated the adventure camp. — Special Correspondent.

`Lions of the Decade' awards given

MYSORE: The Lions Club of Mysore South presented Dakshina Kesari Lions of the Decade award to P. Rajan and K.P. Kumar for their service to society. The award was given away by the past district governor, P.G. Hemdev, who extolled the two for their commitment and service to society. — Special Correspondent.

Financial assistance

for students

Bangalore: Hundred and forty students were given an opportunity to continue their education through a kind gesture on Sunday. Prerana, a voluntary organisation has launched their `Pratibha Poshak' programme to identify meritorious students to extend financial assistance to them. The organisation held a function on Sunday to distribute cheques to 60 students chosen under the programme.

The organisation received 375 applications from students who finished 10th standard with a minimum of 80 per cent. Of these, 140 students were selected after a visit to their homes. Among the 140 chosen for the programme, 60 received financial assistance of Rs. 1.4 lakh. — Staff Reporter

VTU delegation

for Germany

Belgaum: A seven-member team, led by the Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University, K. Balaveera Reddy, Belgaum, will be leaving for Germany to explore the possibility of setting up a state-of-the-art Training Centre on Industrial Drives and Controls in India.

The team will visit the Franchise Training Centre Cooperation of Boch Rexroth at Frankfurt, Festo Diamantics at Esslingen, and Daimler Chrysler, a leading automobile manufacturer. The team members are G.L. Shekhar, K. Venkatesh, Gopal Srivastava, Sharad Srivastava, Achim Schultz, and Carsten. The proposed centre will be set up at the university's regional centre in Bangalore, according to the VTU Registrar, M.S. Shivakumar. — Staff Correspondent

Bhmishya Havshetty of Karnataka College was given a cash prize of Rs. 1,000. The head of the research wing, T.R. Three killed in accident

CHITRADURGA: Three persons including a child were killed on the spot when a lorry carrying groundnut rammed into a hotel on Monday night and the sacs fell on them in Molakalmuru police station limits. The deceased have been identified as Karibasappa (35), her son Thippeshi (8), and Devaraj (20) from Chikkobanahalli village in Molakalmuru taluk. The victims were sleeping outside the hotel. The lorry was heading towards Challakere from Chikkobanahalli. The police have registered a case and are investigating.

Seminar on insurance

TUMKUR: Insurance sector forms the backbone of the country, K.M. Maheshwarappa, President of the Life Insurance Agents' Federation of India, has said. Inaugurating a seminar on "Insurance sector - current happenings and new challenges" at Balaji Conference Hall, Sri Krishna Complex, here on Tuesday, Mr. Maheshwarappa said the insurance sector has become highly competitive after the Union Government opened it to private companies.

A range of new life insurance policies have been introduced and the "time is ripe for insurance agents to become more professional," he said stressing the need for in depth training.

Over 300 agents from different parts of the State attended the seminar.

V.S.G. Yoganand and K. Srinivasan, senior executives from Life Insurance Corporation of India, honoured agents who have worked for more than 25 years. — Correspondent
