DPI protest

CHENNAI: The Dalit Panthers of India on Wednesday organised a protest fast condemning military support to Sri Lanka.

The general secretary, Thol. Thirumavalavan, who inaugurated the fast, appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh not to provide help the Sri Lankan military. He warned that any aid given would be used against Tamils on the island nation. There should be no military accord between the two countries, he said. — Special Correspondent

Results published

CHENNAI: The Anna University has published the VIII semester results of B.E./B.Tech examinations held in April-May 2005. Mark statements are being sent to the colleges.

According to a university release, the last date for applying for revaluation and for photocopy of answer scripts is July 8. Students can apply only through their colleges. The results are available on the university website — www.annauniv.edu. — Special Correspondent

BSNL lineman

hacked to death

NAGAPATTINAM: Ravi (45) of Mayiladuturai, a lineman at the BSNL at Vedaranyam, was allegedly hacked to death by a group while boarding a bus at Mayiladuturai for going to Vedaranyam on Tuesday morning. Police sources said a special police party was formed to nab the assailants. Mayiladuturai town police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter

SALEM: Two crew members of a State Transport Corporation bus, which was damaged in mob violence at Ilakkiampatti in Dharmapuri following the conviction of AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa in the Kodaikanal Pleasant Stay Hotel case, deposed before the Salem First Additional District Sessions judge, D. Krishna Raja, on Tuesday. Three girl students of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University were burnt alive in the violence when a mob set their university bus on fire at Ilakkiampatti on February 2, 2000. Driver Salim Basha and conductor Mariappan of the Coimbatore-Hosur bus claimed that the windowpanes of the corporation bus were damaged by the mob near Dharmapuri and not at Ilakkiampatti. — Special Correspondent

SP appears before Bench in cheating case

MADURAI: The Superintendent of Police, Madurai (Rural), T. Sundaresan, on Tuesday appeared before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court in an anticipatory bail petition moved by a Madurai couple in a cheating case. The Bench on Monday had summoned the police officer.

Recording his presence, Justice S.R. Singharavelu directed Mr. Sundaresan to register the complaint and counter complaint in a cheating case and commence the investigation. Later, the case was posted after two weeks for reporting compliance.

During arguments, when the judge questioned why the complaint, preferred by a couple against a moneylender for charging exorbitant interest, was not registered, the Additional Public Prosecutor submitted that the complaint, alleging that the lender charged Rs. 88 lakhs interest for a loan amount of Rs. 5 lakhs, was unbelievable.

The judge said: "Then what for the legislature has enacted a special law (Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act, 2003) for punishing the offenders. Under the law you are supposed to take the complaint on file, investigate and then come to a conclusion. How can you undo a legislation by stating that the complaint is unbelievable." — Staff Reporter

Two held for murder

Tuticorin: The police on Tuesday arrested two youths here on the charges of murdering a girl at Kollam in Kerala recently.

Police said that Ajay Jones (25) of Nedumangadu near Thiruvannthapuram, who worked in Tuticorin for the past many years, fell in love with Petchiammal.

Promising to marry her, the accused along with his friend Vinod Raj took her to Kollam where he strangulated her and escaped with 40 sovereigns of jewels and Rs.10,000 in cash, owned by the girl.

The accused were handed over to Kerala police, sources said. — Staff Reporter.

Mysterious death

TIRUNELVELI: A young woman was found dead on Tuesday under mysterious circumstances.

Police said M. Chitra (28) of Chennai, who was married to P. Muthukumar of Palayamkottai on June 28 last year, allegedly hanged herself.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Palayamkottai, Chinnasamy, rushed to the spot and sent the body to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. The Revenue Divisional Officer, Durairaj, visited the spot.

As the victim's uncle, Manthiram, raised doubts about the death, the police have registered a case of mysterious death and are investigating. — Staff Reporter.

Held for smuggling rice

Nagercoil: The police on Tuesday arrested Vijaya Kumar (28) of Kerala, Murugan (26) of Kanyakumari and two more persons on a charge of smuggling rice, meant for Public Distribution System.

Sources said that based on a tip-off and as directed by the Superintendent of Police, Ramasubramanian, a highway patrol party intercepted two vehicles laden with 330 bags of rice.

It seized the vehicles. — Staff Reporter.

Child labourers rescued

Tuticorin: Two child labourers were rescued from various industrial units at Kovilpatti on Monday during joint raids conducted by officials from the National Child Labour Projects and departments of revenue and labour.

M. Nallaperumal, Project Director, NCLP, said Maheswari (13) and Karuppasamy (13) were found employed at matchbox units, which are classified as hazardous industries.

While Mahalaksmi was enrolled at Municipal Middle School at Kovilpatti, Karuppasamy was a student in the mainstream education. — Staff Reporter.

Lawyers boycott courts

DINDIGUL: Urging the government not to amend Criminal Procedure Code (Cr. PC), about 650 lawyers have been boycotting courts in the district for the past two days.

While 450 lawyers boycotted courts in Dindigul, 25 lawyers in Vedasandur and 22 in Kodaikanal struck work. — Staff Reporter.
