Later, the case was posted after two weeks for reporting compliance. During arguments, when the judge questioned why the complaint, preferred by a couple against a moneylender for charging exorbitant interest, was not registered, the Additional Public Prosecutor submitted that the complaint, alleging that the lender charged Rs. 88 lakhs interest for a loan amount of Rs. 5 lakhs, was unbelievable. The judge said: "Then what for the legislature has enacted a special law (Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act, 2003) for punishing the offenders. Under the law you are supposed to take the complaint on file, investigate and then come to a conclusion. How can you undo a legislation by stating that the complaint is unbelievable." Staff Reporter
