HYDERABAD: The State experienced widespread rain on Tuesday with the south-west monsoon turning active under the influence of a low pressure area which moved inland from the west Bay of Bengal. There was rain at most places in Coastal Andhra and Telangana. Kaleswaram recorded rainfall of 6 cm. - Special Correspondent

New norms on Girijan teachers' transfers

HYDERABAD: The Government has issued fresh orders on guidelines for effecting transfers of Girijan teachers, for which counselling is to be held on June 30. The orders specify that counselling should be held first for filling vacancies in the girls ashram schools. It should be followed by counselling for women teacher's (general) posts, according to a press release issued here on Tuesday by the Andhra Pradesh United Teachers' Federation. - Staff Reporter

Medical employees'

plea to Government

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Medical Employees' Union (APMEU) has urged the State Government to reach an amicable settlement with the agitating junior doctors and called upon medical employees to be prepared for "solidarity action" if the strike continued. In a statement, APMEU president, G. Ramchander, and general secretary, K.Krishnamacharyulu, extended support to the strike against privatisation of medical education and commercialisation of health services. - Special Correspondent

Ryot's bid to end life near police station

NALGONDA: A farmer, Bandaru Veladri, of Ramapuram in Nadigudem mandal on Tuesday attempted suicide in front of Nadigudem police station alleging that the police were not helping him to solve a land dispute.

According to the police, Veladri was involved in a dispute with one A. Rama Rao in connection with a land transfer. - Staff Reporter

Municipality-wise manifestos by TDP

HYDERABAD: In a major effort at decentralisation, the Telugu Desam has decided to release municipality-wise manifestos for the coming elections in cities and towns besides leaving the choice of candidates to them. The TDP general secretary, K. Srihari, told presspersons that a broad outline of the manifesto would be sent to the party's municipal units and they in turn would highlight achievements as well as local issues and present them before the electorate. On the party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu's three-day visit to Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram from Wednesday, he said one of the main purposes of the tour was to review the preparedness of the party for the coming elections. Judicial probe sought by Christian body

HYDERABAD: The All-India United Christians Movement For Equal Rights (AIUCMER) has demanded a judicial probe into growing atrocities against pastors and Christian community in the last three years. The AIUCMER president, Jose Daniel, senior vice-president and MLA, Christine Lazarus, said people and reasons behind the atrocities should be exposed. They also demanded legislation on the Minorities and Religious Persons (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on the lines SC ST (Prevention of Atrocities ) Act, 1989, during the monsoon session of Parliament. - Staff Reporter

Panchayat bypoll held

KURNOOL: Byelection was conducted to three major panchayats in Kurnool district on Tuesday. Candidates owing allegiance to the Congress party won the election. The election to Palukur was necessitated due to the suspension of the sarpanch on graft charges, while the sarpanch of Panyam was disqualified for having more than two children. The sarpanch of Bilakalagudur in Gadivemula mandal had died. The newly sarpanches were Ramalakshmamma (Palukur), Nagaraju (Panyam) and Chinna Venganna (Bilakalagudur). - Staff Reporter

Five shops burgled

KURNOOL: Five cloth shops were burgled on Monday night at the Textile Complex near old bus stand here. According to reports, the gang gained entry into the shop lifting the shutter with rods. A small boy was reportedly employed to crawl through the narrow gap and steal the cash. A sum of Rs. 9,000 was stolen from the five shops. No other valuables including clothes were touched. - Staff Reporter

Body found

KURNOOL: The police recovered the body of an unidentified person from the Tungabhadra riverbed here on Tuesday. They suspect that he was murdered a few days ago and buried there. The body was exhumed and sent for post-mortem. - Staff Reporter

Motorcyclist killed

CUDDAPAH: A motorcyclist, Nagaraju, of Proddatur died and the pillion rider, Bhaskar, was severely injured when the two-wheeler skidded off and fell near Palagiri on Tuesday. - Staff Reporter

Boy suffers burns

CUDDAPAH: A 13-year rag picker, Subbarayudu, sustained burns on his chest and neck when a snapped electric wire fell on him at Sanjeevanagar bypass road in Proddatur town on Tuesday, the police said. , according to the police. - Staff Reporter
