Ensure subsidies to

the poor: Chandy

NEW DELHI: Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Tuesday accepted the rationale in better targeting of all subsidies but cautioned against using it as a pretext for reducing subsidies that go to the disadvantaged sections of society. Addressing the Inter-State Council meeting here, he said the State should ensure that subsidies to disadvantaged sections were maintained at adequate levels and increased wherever required from time to time. As for the issue of raising user charges to cost recovery levels - another item on the agenda - Mr. Chandy said while the intention was to enhance revenue, this was a path that should be embarked upon with great caution. — Special Correspondent

Petrol bunk staff

to join strike

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Petrol bunk workers have decided to join the general strike on July 5. AITUC-led Petrol Bunk Employees' Union president Pattom Sasidharan and geneal secretary Powdikonam Asokan said in a statement here on Tuesday that the petrol bunk workers would strike work from midnight of July 4. They appealed to bunk owners to cooperate with the strike. — Special Correspondent

Give up move to privatise FCI: CPI(M)

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leader of the Opposition V. S. Achuthanandan and CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan have come down heavily on the Government move to privatise the Food Corporation of India (FCI). In separate statements here on Tuesday, the two leaders called upon the Central Government not to go ahead with the privatisation move, as it would adversely affect the nation's food security. Mr. Achuthanandan warned the Government of sharp response from the people in case the move was not given up, and Mr. Vijayan said a consumer State like Kerala would be the worst hit by the privatisation of FCI. — Special Correspondent

Teachers' union

plans dharna

KOTTAYAM: Kerala Aided Private Teachers' Union (KAPTU) will stage a dharna before the Collectorate on July 2 to draw the attention of the authorities to the various demands being put forward by it. Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, leaders of the union said the aided sector was facing grave threat from the new policy initiative of the State Government, which showed a clear tilt towards encouraging the unaided sector. — Staff Reporter

Diamond Jubilee fete

THRISSUR: The Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the St. Mary's College here will be inaugurated by the writer and social activist Sugathakumari on Thursday. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the College Principal Sr. Jesmi said Justice Sreedevi willl deliver a talk on the `legal aspects of women's freedom' after the inaugural function. A host of programmes, including a lecture series by prominent personalities from different walks of life, have been arranged as part of the celebrations, she said. — Staff Reporter

Left parties protest against fuel price hike

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Left parties took out protest marches to Central Government offices in the district, protesting against the steep hike in the price of petrol and diesel on Tuesday.

The CPI(M) and the CPI took out marches separately.

CPI(M) district secretary K. Ananthagopan, inaugurated the dharna in front of the Head Post Office in Pathanamthitta. The party district leaders Amrutham Gokulan, Omalloor Sankaran and V.K. Purushothaman Pillai also spoke. The police removed the protestors later. — Staff Reporter

Four held on

theft charge

KOLLAM: A special squad of the Kollam Police arrested four persons on charges of theft on Tuesday. They were arrested red-handed while they were attempting to steal a VCD player from a car at Thamarakkulam. They have been identified as Sunil, 18, Kalesh, 19, Sumesh, 18, and Rajaram, 18, all natives of Kollam.

The police said that the four used to steal vehicle parts and fittings.

Lorry batteries and a good number of VCDs have been recovered from them. They were presented before a court and remanded. — Staff Reporter
