`Stop religious appeasement'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Youth Congress on Tuesday strongly came out against senior party leaders accusing them of appeasing caste and religious leaders with an eye on their professed vote banks.

Addressing a press conference here, Youth Congress State president K. P. Anil Kumar said the organisation, at its leadership camp held at Adoor recently, had discussed this issue in detail and felt that the fidelity of Congress leaders towards religious and caste leaders would do the party no good in the long run.

He said the Congress should not allow caste and religious leaders to set its agenda. It should uphold the principles of secularism and work for the betterment of all sections of society. Whenever the UDF came to power, these forces managed to extract maximum concessions by parading their vote bank and threatening the coalition leadership, he said.

The organisation, in its political resolution, strongly opposed this trend and wanted the leadership to take a corrective step. Showing signs of revival, the Youth Congress camp passed four major resolutions, covering economic policy, politics, international relations and organisational revamp.

The political resolution covered several major areas including corruption, relations with coalition partners, secularism, development and factionalism to mention a few.

Mr. Anil Kumar said. Its political resolution expressed concern over the tendency of youngsters getting attracted to fundamentalist organisations. It wanted the State and Central Governments to probe the source of funding of some of the fundamentalist organisations.

Announcing the organisation's plan to become vibrant, Mr. Anil Kumar said district camps would be held from July 8 to 20. On August 9, observed as Youth Congress day, padayatras would be taken out in the panchayats
