Vinay is champion

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Vinay Hari defeated Himanshu Kotbagi 15-7, 15-6 and claimed the boys' under-13 singles title in the Tata Indicom State junior ranking badminton championship conducted by Narendra Ubhyakar Badminton Academy at the KBA courts here on Tuesday.

Vinay Hari relished every moment of his triumph, which wiped out memories of the loss he suffered at the hands of Himanshu in their last summit clash at the Canara Union recently.

Vinay Hari was determined not to repeat his mistakes. Attacking strongly on both flanks, he took a 6-0 in the first game and though Himanshu rallied to cut the deficit to 7-9, Hari stepped up the pace and took the next six points. In the second, Himanshu made too many unforced errors and slumped to defeat.

The boys' under-19 singles final turned out to be a one horse race as the top seed, V. Amar blasted an inconsistent Sashank Sastry 15-2, 15-0. Amar later completed a fine double when he teamed up with Mohit Kamath and beat Sashank Sastry and G.M. Nandeesh 12-15, 15-5, 17-15 in the doubles final. Aditya R. Prakash from Mandya made short work of B. Nitin, also from Mandya, 15-12, 15-6 in the boys' under-16 final.

In the under-13 girls' singles, Tanya Ravi added yet another title to her kitty, beating Devaki Menon 11-7, 11-2. Devaki did well to stretch her rival in the first game, showing flair in her maiden final.

S. Siddarth bagged the boys' under-10 singles title with a 15-13, 15-4 win over S.A. Vishal.

Raja R. Peter, General Manager, Tata Teleservices, which sponsored the event, presided and gave away the prizes.

The results (finals):

Boys under-19 singles: V. Amar bt Sashank Sastry 15-2, 15-0. Doubles: V. Amar & Mohit Kamath bt Sashank Sastry & G.M. Nandeesh 12-15, 15-4, 17-15.
