Universities runs riot; easy for Orissa

DOWN BUT NOT OUT: A stumble can't hamper Indian Universities' Usha's effort to get past Vidya Tamrakar of Chhattisgarh.

NEW DELHI: Goals came in a deluge as Haryana and Indian Universities demolished Karnataka and Chhattisgarh respectively in the the 53rd National women's hockey championship at the Shivaji Stadium here on Tuesday.

The Universities team, runner-up at the last Nationals in Lucknow, started tentatively against Chhattisgarh before skipper Rajnish Mudgil slammed in a hat-trick to raise the stakes for her team in the Pool B league.

Universities wasted six penalty corners before the umpire awarded a stroke, which Rajnish converted with a scoop.

On changing the ends, striker Sarvjeet was set up by Sangeeta Kadian and Universities was 2-0 up in the 37th minute.

After having wasted 13 penalty corners, Rajnish finally found her touch. Her hat-trick came when she scored in the 50th, 56th and 58th before Sarvjeet out the match for a 6-0 win.

Kanu, Kamala excel

Haryana, the only team that could chase Railways to the title match, opened its campaign with a thumping 15-0 win. Kanu Priya scored the first hat-trick of the championship before Kamala Cheema revelled with five goals.

In another Pool A match, Orissa defeated Uttar Pradesh 4-0. After Sangita Minz had put Orissa ahead in the sixth minute, Uttar Pradesh controlled the pace of the match for the most part of the first half.

Orissa finally managed to break the deadlock when captain Nilima Kujur converted a penalty corner in the 57th minute for 2-0.

Pratima set herself for the third goal in tandem with Asima Bilchen Kispotta in the 62nd minute before Ejren closed the match on a pass from Ejren.

Pool A: Haryana 15 (Sandeep Kaur 2nd, Jasjeet Kaur 8th and 33rd, Kamla Cheema 14th, 15th, 19th, 24th and 50th, Kanu Priya 16th, 56th, 60th and 69th, Simarjeet 17th, Jaideep Kaur 40th, Harjinder 54th) bt Karnataka 0.

Orissa 4 (Sangita Minz 6th, Nilima Kujur 57th, Pratima Tirkey 62nd, Ejren Dadel 66th) bt Uttar Pradesh 0.

Pool B: Indian Universities 6 (Rajnish Mudgil 24th, 50th, 56th and 58th, Sarvjeet 37th and 67th) bt Chhattisgarh 0.
