NEW DELHI: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan on Tuesday demanded that all residential and industrial properties in the villages of Delhi be exempted from property tax. Dr. Vardhan charged that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Delhi Government had done injustice to the villagers by exempting only the residential properties from the purview of property tax. He demanded that the State Government constitute a commission for all-round development of the urbanised villages and the rural areas of Delhi. The panel, he said, should submit its report within a fixed time on how there can be improvement in the standard of living of all the villages. Claiming that Delhi BJP had continuously fought for exempting property tax on all the properties of the villages, exempting the enterprises and industries from licensing and extending the Lal Dora area, he said the party wanted improvement in the standard of living of the villages. Asserting that it was the result of these efforts that both Delhi Government and MCD have decided to exempt the residential properties from the Unit Area Method, the Delhi BJP president said these steps had also been taken by the Congress in view of the forthcoming MCD elections. As the Delhi Government had developed the residential and commercial complexes only by acquiring the lands of the villages at cheap rates, Dr. Vardhan lamented that after losing their lands the villagers have been left with only a limited choice of livelihood. As such, he said, the people are fighting unemployment by installing small-scale units. But as the Delhi Government and MCD have made licence compulsory for industries and trades in the villages, he said it had become extremely difficult for the expanding families to eke out a living especially as the population of villages has been constantly rising and the Lal Dora area has not been extended. Contending that only exemption of residential properties from property tax was not sufficient, Dr. Vardhan said the Delhi Government should frame a comprehensive time-bound plan for development of both urban and rural areas of the villages.
