People's representatives angry over `inadequate' seed supply

  • Discrimination in fund allocation alleged
  • Advance planning for agriculture suggested
  • Officials claim no shortage of seed

SRIKAKULAM: Officials of the Agriculture Department and the AP Seed Development Corporation came under fire at the general body meeting of the Zilla Parishad held here on Tuesday for failing to supply required paddy seed.

The claim of officials that there was no shortage of paddy seed had only added to the anger of the zilla parishad members. The Zilla Parishad Chairman, Y.V. Suryanarayana, presided over the meeting. Issues like protocol violation and discrimination in allotment of funds also rocked the meeting leading to shouts and counter shouts by TDP and Congress members.

    MP's advice

Raising the issue, the TDP MLA, Kinjarapu Acheyya Naidu, pointed out that in Santhabommali mandal, only 30 tons of seed was supplied while the requirement was 300 tons.

Mr. Kinjarapu Yerrannaidu, MP, wanted to know why officials were not in a position to supply required paddy seed when they knew the quantity required. Mr. Naidu stressed the importance of advance planning for agriculture. They should also be ready with alternative plan in case of low rainfall.

The Joint Director said that the department made arrangements for supply of 45,000 tons.

There was no shortage of paddy seed, the official claimed.

Kuna Ravi Kumar, ZPTC member, pointed out to a specific case where paddy seed supplied by the AMC and handed over by the district Collector to a farmer, failed to germinate.

"If the department is not in a position to supply seed, let us tell the same to farmers, so that there will no confusion," said the TDP MLA, Gouthu Shyama Sundar Sivaji.

While officials gave details of irrigation works taken up, Mr. Sivaji said no work was sanctioned for Sompeta.
