Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh Government on Tuesday said the State has a ``conditional commitment'' to provide 300 cusecs of water to Delhi for the Sonia Vihar project only after it receives 4000 cusecs from the Tehri project that is likely to be completed next year. ``The commitment on the part of Uttar Pradesh is only to provide 300 cusecs of water to Delhi but only after it receives 4000 cusecs from the Tehri project which was yet to be completed,'' UP Irrigation Minister Munna Singh Chauhan told reporters here. ``There has been no fresh commitment on the part of the State regarding releasing of water for the Sonia Vihar project,'' he said. On reports saying that Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav backtracked on his commitment to provide 270 cusecs of water for the Sonia Vihar project, Mr. Chauhan said ``the Chief Minister had been very categorical on the issue in saying that water would be supplied only after fulfilling the requirements of the State.'' Uttar Pradesh is at present providing 800 cusecs of water to Delhi from the Hathnikund barrage and 200 cusecs from Modinagar, he added. The Minister said delay in completion of projects such as Lakhwar Bayasi on the Yamuna in Uttaranchal was responsible for water shortage in U.P. and Delhi. -- PTI
