Second reform package meaningful: Jayalalithaa

"The emphasis is to promote growth"

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday described the second reform package in the State "meaningful," as the emphasis was to promote growth.

Speaking at the 9th Inter-State Council meeting here, the Chief Minister said, "It is in the arena of Citizen Centric Government that we can make dramatic headway. In Tamil Nadu, we have been implementing most of the reforms suggested and gone even further."

Ms Jayalalithaa stressed the need for harnessing Information Technology to make possible e-governance initiatives that were citizen-specific.

The Chief Minister felt that "while the Union Government preaches the mantra of greater decentralisation by States to panchayat raj institutions, it does not similarly practise decentralisation by providing States with greater powers to be more responsive to the people."

She wanted the Centre to take into account the suggestions on how laws should be made on the subjects in the Concurrent List (in the Constitution).
