Special Correspondent
MANGALORE: The Women Vegetable Growers and Head-load Vendors Cooperative Society has taken exception to the "market conditions" at the central market and appealed to the Mangalore City Corporation to immediately set up a raitha bazaar here. In an open letter to the corporation Commissioner, the society has stated that the corporation had not honoured the recommendations made by the tripartite meeting held under the former Deputy Commissioner on June 27, 2004. According to the recommendations, which were accepted by the district administration, the corporation had to make special arrangements for the society members to function normally inside the central market under the demarcated area. But all that was not done despite the agreement. But now the corporation officials were bringing pressure on the members of the society to move into makeshift sheds put up inside the market. These sheds do not have proper ventilation, light. Hardly 10 vendors can do business there while there were more than 50 vendors. The society said because of pressure from the officials the vendors were forced to sell their produce to middlemen at wholesale prices. The letter stated that though the number of vendors was small during the monsoon it would go up to 300 in August and the subsequent months. This number was official and merits formation of a raitha bazaar at the earliest, it said.
