Fuel price hike triggers agitation leading to road blockade

VIJAYAWADA: Eight activists of the Left parties staging a rasta roko in front of Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu' statue were taken into custody by the city police on Tuesday.

The CPI(M) leaders -- V. Umamaheswara Rao, Ch. Babu Rao, and the CPI leaders K. Sekhar Babu, P. Surya Rao and E.Appala Naidu -- were taken into custody.

UPA blamed

The rasta roko was staged in response to a nation-wide call by the Left parties to register their protest against the steep hike in petrol and diesel prices by the United Progressive Alliance Government.

The police action was reportedly initiated to prevent a major traffic jam at the railway low bridge.

The activists and leaders were given station bail and released in the afternoon.
