Amendment notified

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: : The State Government has issued a gazette notification formalising the amendment to the Madras City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919 making the maximum statutory period between two Council meetings as three months.

This month's council meeting, slated for Wednesday, was postponed as a result.

The DMK leader in the Council, C.V. Malayan, said this went against the spirit of the Chief Minister's statement in the Assembly that meetings could be held in between the three-months period.

The council meetings in the past two and a half years have witnessed unruly scenes with the councillors of the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam clashing over political debates and indulging in personal remarks.

The State Legislature had passed the Bill to amend the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919 in April and the notification was issued on June 22 after the Governor had accorded sanction to it. the Bill.
