TAMBARAM: The design of the pedestrian subway at Pallavaram has come in criticism from residents and traders in the locality. They fear that the subway — where work has been halted due to a standoff between the Pallavaram Municipality and the National Highways Authority of India — will be more of an inconvenience than help.

According to residents, the steps are too steep and the ramp for cyclists is too narrow. The Federation of the Civic and Welfare Associations of Pallavaram Municipality and members of the Pallavaram Traders Association have added their voice to the concerns about the design of the subway. The one-metre wide ramp between the flight of steps will cause chaos in the subway, they said.

Work on the subway is almost complete. The ramp was barely wide for a person to push a cycle along the ramp. Further, cyclists will find it hard to negotiate the slope. Experts, including former engineers with the Highways Department, concurred.

The subway should have either had only a flight of steps for pedestrians or the ramp must have been built wider and with a gentler slope, residents said. The Federation has appealed to senior officials of NHAI to set right the problem.
