Bandh by transport unions peaceful

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The bandh called by various motor transport unions against the diesel price hike passed off peacefully in the city on Tuesday.

R.Sridharan, General Secretary, Chennai Goods Transport Association, said vehicles carrying essential commodities were not stopped during the strike period, he said.

The Left parties and trade unions held a demonstration in front of Memorial Hall in Park Town

A few autorickshaws carrying passengers were stopped and damaged by the protestors. Police said eight autorickshaws sustained damage. No arrests were made, police said.

In South Chennai's residential areas, the strike met with a poor response, particularly among autorickshaw drivers. However, the maxi cabs both inside the city as well as in the suburban colonies, did not run for most of the day.
