T. Madhavan

Erratic power supply and irregular bus services were some of the grievances Ms. Valarmathi expressed satisfaction about the Municipality's handling of problems

CHENNAI: The grievance day meeting arranged jointly by the Federation of Adambakkam Welfare Associations and the United Forum of Nanganallur Welfare Associations on Tuesday saw scores of residents from Adambakkam address their civic problems to the MLA and the Rural Industries Minister B. Valarmathi.

Some residents took time off from their regular work. The problems brought to notice included erratic power supply, poor water supply, irregular bus services, absence of under ground sewage and bad roads. The Alandur Municipal Commissioner and TNEB and Chennai Metrowater officials accompanied the Minister.

Ms. Valarmathi expressed satisfaction about the Municipality's handling of problems regarding bad roads. She asked the Electricity Board officials to ensure satisfactory power supply. Ms. Valarmathi said she would talk to Metrpolitan Transport Corporation officials about restoring services on route number 51-C.

When asked about the Adambakkam Lake, she said she was determined to preserve the lake at any cost. She said estimates for improving the lake have been sent to the District Collector and that she would pursue it with the authorities.

"The Balakrishnapuram burial ground will be cleaned up and would be upgraded as a gasified crematoria," she said. She added that Rs.40 lakhs has been sanctioned from the MLA's area development fund for this purpose.

Ms. Valarmathi said submersible motors would be installed at a cost of Rs.19 lakhs at the Nilamangai Nagar pumping station. The amount would be drawn from the district administration fund.

When the New Colony residents expressed concern over the situation of a burial ground inside their locality, Ms. Valarmathi immediately ordered the construction of a compound wall around it and assured them that work will start on Thursday.
