CHENNAI: Several varieties of the famous Pochampalli silk sarees are now available in Chennai for a "song." The Andhra Pradesh State handloom Weavers Cooperative Society is organising an 18-day mela in T.Nagar where the Pochampalli sarees will be on sale at a 50 per cent discount. It will be a one-stop shop for consumers. The price range is from Rs. 900 to Rs.1,800 after discount. According to the Society's Accounts Officer, K. Madhusudan, Pochampalli sarees are known for their intricate design. The speciality being that the yarn is tied and dyed before weaving and no "zari" is added, making the sarees less expensive. Hundreds of weaver-families in villages in and around Pochampalli in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh are involved in the production of the sarees. Unfortunately there was no market for their produce, which led to massive accumulation of stocks. This in turn had reportedly resulted in mass suicide of weavers as they were left unemployed. The Andhra Pradesh Government stepped in, lifted the entire stock and to dispose them of, the society decided to exhibit them all over the country. The exhibition, open up to July 15 at 24, Sir Thyagaraya Road, T. Nagar, was inaugurated on Tuesday by the Special Officer and Managing Director, Co-optex, V. Varaprasada Rao.
