VISAKHAPATNAM: With the district experiencing rain for the last few days, sowing operations have commenced. Sowing of different crops, including paddy, is on in this mainly rain-fed district. So far sowing of different crops was completed in 35,600 hectares, including 22,520 hectares under sugarcane, out of a total normal area of 2.50 lakh hectares, the Joint Director of Agriculture, L. Ramachandra Rao, said on Tuesday. In Visakhapatnam, unlike in other districts, the sowing generally begins in July and goes on till mid-August or even till September. ``If the rainfall is good now and it continues, we will have a good season'', Mr. Ramachandra Rao said. While sowing of paddy had commenced, sugarcane was sown in 22,520 hectares out of the normal area of 40,000 hectares. Maize was sown (in the agency area) in 3,752 hectares, ragi in 3,459 hectares and minor millets in 4,204 hectares.
