Reader's Mail

Display list of taxes

It is with reference to the readers' mail ( The Hindu June 22) wherein a reader wrote about brokers at RTO office.

While brokers help clients, some of them cheat.

When a friend of mine approached a broker to pay road tax, he was told that green tax should also be paid and the broker got the due amount.

When my friend said that the green tax was remitted last year, the broker said that it was to be paid again.

However, when my friend got back road tax and the RC book, there was no entry in the book for green tax and on enquiry he was told that the entry would be made later.

He got suspicious and came to me for clearing his doubt. Only then he came to know that the green tax has to be renewed once in five years.

I request the authorities to display the charges that the road users have to pay as the rules of any office should be transparent.

The RTO office at Tiruchi has a board outside with a lot of details. But it is silent about the requirements the customers have to comply with so that they may not waste their time unnecessarily squabbling.

It may be pertinent to mention that in insurance sector, the offices send demand notice to the policyholders for payment of premium as a sort of reminder.

The RTO office also may adopt this procedure of sending a notice to the road users by quoting the amount of tax they have to pay and the deadline.

Bus shelter wanted

There is no proper shelter for any bus-stop along the Chennai bypass road on the stretch between TVS Tollgate and Palpannai roundtana. Passengers are put to severe hardship during summer and rainy days. I request the authorities concerned to take remedial action as early as possible.

Need for bus stop

Though the Chennai bypass road between TVS Tollgate and Palpannai Roundtana is beaming with industries, bus services are inadequate. It causes great difficulties to the public to board buses from any bus stop along the road, especially during at night. There are also many residential localities along the road. It will be better if the authorities make arrangements to ensure that mofussil buses halt here at frequent intervals to subvert the need for a section of the public to go to the Central Bus Stand.

Cancel stoppage

Passengers boarding the city bus (route No.128) plying from Central Bus Stand to Thuvakudi feel nauseated owing to a stoppage of the bus near a public urinal. The odour from the urinal, which lacks maintenance, causes health hazards for the passengers during the waiting time.

It is particularly embarrassing for women to wait at the bus stop nearer a gents' urinal. This problem has to be addressed by the authorities concerned at the earliest.

Reduce DD charges

A commission of Rs.35 is charged by banks on a demand draft for Rs.10,000. Students find it difficult to pay this commission while taking DDs for buying applications or remitting examination fee for P.G entrance examinations conducted by universities and institutions.

Therefore, the banks should consider exempting students from paying this commission or fix a flat rate of Rs.10 per DD issued for educational purposes.

Fuel price hike

The Central Government frequently increases the price of petroleum products. For every one rupee increase in the international market, the public have to shell out Rs.2 as tax to both Central and State Governments.

It is atrocious on the part of the Government to blame the international price rise. Indeed, the price rise will definitely have its cascading effect on the economy, resulting in inflation. Moreover, the increased income will never help even the Government, as the rise in cost of all projects would eat up the revenue. The Government and industries have also to pay the dearness allowance to its employees to offset the inflation.
