Hospital gets nod to use `Watchman Device'
Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD:
The Care Hospital here has become the only hospital in the country that has been allowed by the US Federal Drug Authority (FDA) to use the Watchman Device, which prevents harmful blood clots from entering the blood stream that cause strokes.
The device, which was hitherto employed only by select hospitals in the US and Europe, will be of more worth to patients with atrial fibrillation, a condition in which the upper chambers of the heart beat too fast, causing blood to stagnate and form clots. The problem mostly exists in patients with high blood pressure, diabetes and coronary heart diseases.
The catch of Care acquiring these devices, is in that the hospital, according to its chairman, B. Somaraju, will implant it in needy patients free of cost. The advantages of the device, he said, included avoiding usage of medicines for a longer duration and just a night's stay in the hospital with the total recovery to be in 24 hours.
