Staff Reporter

The centres will start work on July 1

  • Two officers to answer queries
  • Queries through Internet and e-mail will be answered

BANGALORE: The Department of Central Excise and Customs has set up two help centres for taxpayers in the city in cooperation with the Bangalore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCIC) and the Karnataka Small-scale Industries' Association (KASSIA).

The centres will become operational on July 1, according to the Chief Commissioner of Customs and Excise, R. Sundara Raman.

He told presspersons on Tuesday that the objective of the centres is to guide traders, promote voluntary tax payment and widen the tax base by creating awareness among taxpayers of their rights and obligations.

The centres are set up on the premises of the BCIC and KASSIA.

Two officers will be deputed to attend to general queries. Queries through Internet and e-mail will be answered.

The centre will facilitate e-filing of tax returns.

If the officials concerned are unable to reply to queries, these will be forwarded to the taxpayers' assistance unit headed by a senior officer for felicitating a prompt reply, Mr. Sundara Raman said.

Asked whether the number of help centres will be increased, he said that it depends on the quality and quantity of queries. Similar centres in Belguam, Mysore, and Mangalore will start functioning on Friday.

    Timings

Both the help centres will work Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to receive and respond to queries related to Central Excise and service tax matters, and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. to receive and respond to queries related to Customs matters.

The service will be available to all traders and will not confined to the members of the BCIC and the KASSIA, Mr. Sundara Raman said.
