Technological marvel set to unfold on July 2

Delhi Metro corridor from the Kashmere Gate to the Central Secretariat People will be able to enjoy mobile phone service on the underground Metro

NEW DELHI: A technological marvel is all set to unfold here in the form of the seven-km section of the underground Delhi Metro corridor from the Kashmere Gate to the Central Secretariat. Scheduled to be opened on July 2, this section will have "machine room-less glass elevators" at the Central Secretariat station and a 400-metre air-conditioned walkway at the Delhi Main station.

The section would also throw open to the public the country's deepest Metro station at Chawri Bazaar which has been built using the tunnelling method. This station also boasts of the country's first fully pre-fabricated platforms, both 185 metres long, constructed using pre-cast slabs. The section will have the high technology that the underground Metro operations have at present. Like the Delhi University-Kashmere Gate section, here also people will be able to enjoy facilities such as the Automatic Fare Collection system that uses electronic contact-less travel tokens, smart cards, and high-speed escalators.

Safe travel

The people will be able to enjoy mobile phone service on the underground Metro. The section would also have some hidden aspects of top-end technology. It will have the Automatic Train Operation System under which a train is run by a computer at a speed of up to 80 km an hour. The driver's role is reduced to pressing the start button and applying the brakes. The system ensures safe travel as it eliminates the possibility of trains coming too close on the same track.

The section will operate on 25 kV rigid overhead electrical equipment which not only reduces electricity loss but also does away with the necessity of constructing a sub-station above every station. With the launch of the underground section late last year, the Delhi Metro had become the first in the world to operate on this system. Since the Delhi Metro has an arrangement with the Northern Railway, in the event of a power breakdown affecting all its three power sources, it will still be able to draw power from the Indian Railways.

The section having six stations — Kashmere Gate, Delhi Main, New Delhi, Connaught Place, Patel Chowk and Central Secretariat — had been cleared by the Chief Commissioner for Railway Safety, G.P. Garg, on June 8 after two days of inspection.
