This Day That Age
India has protested to Portugal against her barbarous and inhuman ways of dealing with the satyagrahis in Goa. The Portuguese Minister in New Delhi was summoned to the External Affairs Ministry on June 28 to receive the protest note which, official circles said, was couched in "very strong terms." Two Goan satyagrahis, arrested by the Portuguese authorities on January 26 for suspected political activities, have been sentenced by the Military Tribunal. Prabhakar Datta Moio has been awarded nine years' imprisonment and a fine for two years at the rate of 15 escudos per day. He has also been deprived of civic rights for 20 years. Quema Dorma Gauncar, the other suspect, has been sentenced to four years' imprisonment, a fine for two years at the rate of 10 escudos per day and deprived of civic rights for 15 years.
