SALEM: Villagers of P. Nattamangalam near Salem observed a one-day token fast near the Office of the Salem Superintendent of Police on Wednesday demanding action against policemen at Kondalampatti Police Station alleging that they foisted cases to harass them.

Nearly 300 villagers, mostly Dalits and women, along with elders and local leaders of various political parties, marched to Sevvapet where the SP's office was situated.

They observed the fast near the fire station under the leadership of A. S. Kurinchivendan, North District Secretary of Dalit Panthers of India (DPI). Leaders from political parties including DPI, AIADMK, DMK, CPI, CPI (M), Congress and Janata Dal spoke and assured the villagers their support.

The villagers alleged that the police in Kondalampatti police station were promoting katta panchayat in the village by helping rowdy elements, which affected peaceful coexistence. Various cases were registered against them for petty reasons.

A woman at the fast said that the police violated human rights. They demanded that stringent action be taken against those who created trouble in the village.
