Engineering students to stall counselling

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The All Kerala Engineering Students Association has threatened to block the counselling for admission to professional courses scheduled at Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode on Friday.

Representatives of the Association said here on Wednesday that the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government had failed to keep its promise given to students' organisations on admission to self-financing colleges last year.

Association convener S.R. Nithesh urged the Government to try to evolve a consensus on the fee structure with the managements of self-financing colleges without getting entangled in court cases.

He suggested that Government-controlled professional colleges collect only Government fee from students admitted under merit quota. The Government should take steps to withdraw its decision to collect higher fee from students admitted under merit quota during 2002 and 2003, he said.

The Association demanded that the Government annul the entrance test conducted by the consortium of self-financing colleges.

The Government should distribute various benefits to students admitted to self-financing colleges under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe quota.
