Letters to the Editor
The article, `Should the IMD monopolise monsoon forecasts?' (June 29), has exposed the mindset of those at the helm of the country's top scientific establishments. The Department of Science and Technology has failed to make an objective assessment of the repeated failures of the monsoon forecasts of the India Meteorological Department. Instead of reprimanding the IMD, the DST's new directive to the Bangalore-based Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation and other institutions not to make their research public sounds absurd. The CMMACS should be praised for promoting transparency in scientific organisations by making public its research findings.
